Getting to know Jebe

One of my new year's resolution for 2013 is to read 1 book per month. It will be a total of 12 books for the whole year. But as usual my new year resolution only last for 1 day. Entering May, I only managed to finish 1 book - Jebe the Super Morpher.

This book is written by Azizi Ali - one of Malaysia's investment guru which have wrote several self-help books. But this book that I had bought at Senai Airport is not about any investment, but his own autobiography.

Since the book's title is weird enough, it got my attention at the MPH book shelf. Azizi wrote about his childhood memories up until he's done with MCE (equivalent to the current SPM). Since what he already became today, maybe there is a lot of people which might think that he was once a model student. That is where the surprise starts. He was not. In fact he was the type of student that created problems at school. Once during exam, he didn't even answer a single question in the Add Math paper!

He was born in Perlis.Until he was 6 years old, he lived with his grandmother. Surrounded by the environment in the village, his imagination ran wild hence creating his alter ego - Jebe the Super Morpher. This continues after he came back & lives with his parent. Reading comic books, his alter ego changes to every superheroes that he had read - X Men, Superman, Malay warriors...

I had read some of Azizi's books before. One that I really loves is the one regarding financial guidance when approaching retirement. I think the book's title is 'Retire Rich'. Azizi Ali's way of writing is always quirky, tongue in cheek approach. Considering his childhood experience, it is no wonder why.

Truncated from his book:
  • Occasionally, the boys would come to my house and we would play the war game using my toy guns.
  • As there were no bullets, we had to imagine doing the shooting.
  • All my shots would always hit the targets, meaning the enemy.
  • Every time anyone shot at me, I would turn around & claim that I managed to evade the bullet in time.
  • After a while, the boys didn't want to play the pretend game with me. I wonder why.

Hahahaha. Can you believe this guy?

For me it was a good read. At least it was a diversion from the other books that he wrote. The truth is sometimes I hate reading self help books - feels like someone is lecturing at me.

At the ending of the book right when he finished MCE & got an excellent result, I can see why he is different. Just because he can't decide what he want to do for his future, he stayed at his hometown enrolling into Lower Form Six. That was until he decided that he should moved on & enrolling to be a pilot. And the rest is history I guess because the story stops there.

He is someone that like to cherish his past memories. He remembers most of his childhood friends down to earliest one. As the ending, he noted:
So some thing have changed.
Some things will always remain the same.
Isn't it great to be alive?
