S.E.A. Aquarium: What The Fish!

It was the Labor Day and we planned to go to Singapore to see the fishes at S.E.A. Aquarium.

Not to be confused with the Underwater World Singapore, which is also an aquarium in Pulau Sentosa, the S.E.A. Aquarium is situated inside the Resort World Sentosa, nearby the Universal Studio Singapore. It is quite some time that I had went to Singapore so I need to have my list all check out.

I bought all of the tickets online. After completed the the transactions, we have to print all the tickets to be scan when entering the aquarium. I also bought the tickets for us to enter the Typhoon Theater. The fee for the tickets is as per below:

About the tickets, I actually had missed 15% discount offer by a mere 15 minutes when I had bought the tickets in the wee morning of the Labor Day. The offer had ended exactly on 30th April. I blamed it all on Rosman. If he replied my messages earlier, I would have bought the tickets during the evening.

With all the preparations lined up, we're off at to Singapore at 9.00pm.

All the passports in place.

I planned to enter Singapore via Tuas (2nd Link) since there will be some hiccups with my Autopass Card. But we will exit Singapore by Woodland though. With EDL, the route will be much shorter.

Still jammed even though it is the 2nd link.

We stuck at the immigration complex for almost 45 minutes. It was a public holiday after all. True enough, upon inspection I have to update my Autopass Card with my new road tax details since the last time I entered Singapore was in 2012. Every foreign car need to have this prepaid card to enter Singapore. We have to use this card to pay the tolls, the parking fee and also the entering permit fee. It'll last five years.

Upon exiting the complex, I accidentally entered the 'Have Something to Declare' lane instead in the normal lane. After parking the car to get my Autopass issues resolved, I can't enter the normal lane since it had been blocked. The Singaporean immigration person was quite angry at me,

"Why you enter the red lane. If you don't have anything to declare, you should use the yellow lane. This is the red lane!"

It's not that I enter it on purpose, doofus.

It was almost noon by the time we were on our way to the Sentosa Resort World. But not that I could speed anyway even though it seems that the 3-lane highway was quite clear from cars. The speed limit in Singapore is generally at 90km/h. Instead of using the police force to enforce the speed limit, they have this speed cameras all thorough the island. No escaping that. That is why the Singaporean drivers are quite in order in their own island but behaving like a maniac once they touched the Johor land.

We arrived the place exactly around the lunch hour. Luckily we found a parking nearby and don't need to search the parking lot several times. Already a lot of cars at this moment.

Parking Luck +1

The last time Dahlia & myself went to this place was in 2012 to the Universal Studios. We didn't took the opportunity to look around the place last time. Since to walk around the aquarium shouldn't take so long, we purpose went though the surrounded area.

The escalator to the ground floor.

In front of the famous USS globe. Just the two of us....

Eh lupa pulak. Dah ada tiga sekarang....

Direction to the main attraction is in CAPS LOCK.

Got to stop by this shop before going back.

The entrance to the aquarium.

It was a hot day.

We decided to have our lunch before entering the aquarium. Instead of heading to the McDonalds, we chose to try the Malaysian Food Street, a food court of Malaysian foods nearby the USS. We were not disappointed. The inside of the food court have been designed to look like the traditional food stalls in Malaysia - specifically the Chinese town. Even though it is just a fake facade, it does look interesting with all the bustling - just like the real thing.

Malaysian Chinese town smack dab in the Resort Sentosa.

We arrived exactly during lunch hour, so we already expected the rush hour to eat. Every seats and tables seems to be taken. We have to be patient enough to wait for the families that have been finished eating to empty their place. Dahlia and Rosman was in charge to get us the seats while I was queuing for the food.

Even though the name of the food court is Malaysian Food Street, there are not much choice for us. There was only two choices for us; either the nasi lemak or nasi beriyani. Or the roti canai. This is because most of the foods were Chinese and only two stalls inside the food court is halal certified.

Out of the two choices that we have, we chose the nasi beriyani. The prices was not bad. For the nasi beriyani ayam it was SGD6.50 and for the nasi beriyani kambing it was SGD7.50. Just like the prices of the foods in USS, for me it is reasonable. We even save more because we only drink from the drinks that we already bring together with us.

Just don't convert it to MYR though...... (you need to x2.6)

Enjoying the lunch

Rosman tries hard to blend in.

Finally it is time to go to our primary objective coming here - to the Aquarium!!!!

Before we step into the aquarium, there is this Maritime Exhibition placed before the entrance. The Maritime Exhibition is basically the collection of the maritime history in Asia and South East Asia specifically. There was also a small mention of a name called Malacca, but most of the focus was the China sailors.

A place called Malacca

One of the took my interest was this replica cross section of a ship. It was so big that the height of the ship was more than three storeys high. To emphasized the size of the ship, there were these two giraffe figures in the internal of the ship.

What The Fish!

See those giraffe at the back?

The first thing that we encountered when we entered the aquarium is this big aquarium display that have a sunken ship as its theme. I get to know why they picked the theme of a sunken ship in the first aquarium later on.

Haziq leaning to see the fishes.

Then the crowd started to build up in the next display. It was the tunnel. Since it is one of the earlier attraction, understandably everyone want to take their pictures and selfies. In one time, it was almost impossible for us to get through.

What The Fish!

The fish to look out in the tunnel was the ray.

After that it was a straight forward display. There is his pathway that have the displays of the marine life at both sides. The walkway is big enough to accommodate the visitors on that day.

An interesting way to watch the fish - from the top.

The starfish - Spongebob friend's.

There is a fish inside the photo - masquerading as a leaf.

The Dragonfish!!!

The eggs of the squid

The large cylindrical aquarium.

Some displays of the corals.

Just some fishing people mannequin 'fishing' some people.

A school of fish.

More of the cylindrical aquarium.

The giant crab from the cool ocean of Japan.

The 'kraken' from the cool ocean display.

Time for the jellyfish!

More jellyfish!

I found the same problem when I visited the Osaka Aquarium back in 2007. Since the display for each aquarium can't be too big, the visitors had to flog each an and every display. Not much can be done here.
It is kind of ironic since aquarium meant to be a peaceful display of marine life. Can't be that if you have to push to get to see the fishes.

What The Fish!

Let see what we have here....

Just a specimen of homo sapien doing his cleaning job....

And then it was the mother lode of the attraction at the Aquarium. The Aquarium pride itself with one of the largest Aquarium in the world. It is humongous. The aquarium basically placed in a hall much alike a cinema hall.

The boys were more interested with the fish.

In the background the visitors being lulled with some nice dreamy music. There are no chairs, so everyone just sit on the carpeted floor with some of them even lie on the floor. It was such a peaceful atmosphere - which is the aim of the Resort World Sentosa. Excerpts from wiki:

The centerpiece of the Aquarium is the Open Ocean tank with more than 18,000,000 l (4,000,000 imp gal; 4,800,000 US gal) and 50,000 animals. It has the world's largest viewing panel, 36-metre (118 ft) wide and 8.3-metre (27 ft) tall, which is intended to give visitors the feeling of being on the ocean floor.

Surprisingly after the climatic Open Ocean Aquarium, there is still some fishes and aquarium on the way to the exit door. It seems that the way in the Aquarium works as a u-turn with the Open Ocean Aquarium at the u-point.

Unfortunately after the majestic Open Ocean display, all the other small fishes and aquarium don't stand a chance. On the way back, we just strolled hurriedly to the exit door.

Close up with the nurse shark.

Does our experience with the Aquarium end yet? No.... we still have the Typhoon Theater to cover.

But first, let us pray Zuhur. It have to be noticed that the Aquarium doesn't have a prayer room. In fact, Resort Sentosa only have a prayer room in the Universal Studio. Tough luck as a Muslim who took a vacation in the place for the whole day.

Fortunately this is Singapore, where the patrons are well versed in serving people. One of the boy manning the ticket counter for the Aquarium told us that we could use the nursing room downstairs. He even showed us the way to the room. Malaysian need to learn this is we are to be a first world country.

Fresh from our prayer, we head to the Typhoon Theater. The fact is, I don't even know what exactly this attraction was....

First we had been shown a clip of a China mercenaries that need to deliver a gold cup to some other country in Africa. After that all of us ushered to a hall. The instructions are very clear. Once you enter the hall, you can't get out in the middle of the show. For kids, will it be a challenge?

Inside the hall, the the show is actually a 5D attraction. The clip continues the story with the sailors battling the sea during their journey. The name Typhoon Theater was an appropriate one. We were bombarded with the loud bass sound of the typhoon, the cool air blowing from the giant blowers at the back, and not to mention the water streaming from the water sprinklers at the top.

The whole time I was covering Haziq's ears while shivering because of the cold.

The hall is actually a moving platform. Entering the hall from the top floor, all the viewers will exit through the ground floor. And you know what? It is the beginning of the aquarium - The Sunken Ship, maybe because they want to accentuate the feeling from the movie clip.

So if you have bought the ticket to the Typhoon Theater, enter the show before you enter the Aquarium. It will make more sense. Don't make the same mistake that I did - sort of anti climatic in a way.

Does the show worth it? If you're a Singaporean, maybe it is at SGD15 it is quite cheap. As a Malaysian though, you can just skip the show as MYR40 per person is just a rip off.

What The Fish!

Before we walked out from the Aquarium, we went to the souvenir shop to get some magnets. Alas, the problem with the Resort World is their souvenirs wasn't really appealing. It was the same as USS. We walked out empty handed from the souvenir shop.

Before we end the day, we went to the shops in the Resort World.

Went into the Hard Rock Cafe to get some shirts.

And we went to get some Garret popcorns. According to Dahlia, the price of the popcorns are cheaper compared to the one in KLIA. Just because of that, she bought three bags of the popcorns.

What The Fish!

Sugar overload.

The biggest fish of all? The knowledge that tomorrow I still need to go to the office since it will be Friday while Dahlia and Rosman can have their rest.

What The Fish!
