Captain America 2 (The Winter Soldier): The Best Marvel Sequel

Sequels can be deceiving. As a fan we would love to see the sequels because we expect it to be as great as the original.

But history had proven again and again that Hollywood have the capacity to disappoint in their quest to milk the fans for the moolah. Star Wars Episode 1, 2 & 3, The Matrix 2 & 3, RED 2, Kickass 2, are some of the franchise that I did love the original that have been ruined.

But Marvel does have a lot up of their sleeves since they managed to buck the trend with their new sequel of Captain America 2: The Winter Soldier.

The movie picked up where the Avengers had left from last year. Captain America had been trying to adjust himself to the 22nd century after being frozen from the WW2 era. There was a scene that he kept a list of things he need to try to catch up with this new era. Star Wars, Star Trek & Nirvana managed to get on that list. It also seems that Marvel had more than one version of the list to suit the country where the movie was shown. That was a classy move.

More than one version of the list. From left USA-Britain-Korea version.

Right from the first mission, we could see that the hero had upgrade himself compared to the first movie. Even though he was already the super strength, well built soldier since the first movie - his fighting skills really up a notch this time.

Unlike the steam punk one-dimensional action in the first movie, his fighting style changed for this second movie. There was spin kicks and superb punches traded throughout the fighting scene. He even didn't wore the parachute when jumping out from the plane.

The new fighting style does pack some punch

Even Haziq that doesn't understand a thing about the movie said:

"Wow, hebatnyaaa..."

When seeing the first fighting scene on the ship. Of course I had to shushed him down. His voice is too loud in the hall even though he's still 4 years old.

The plot of this movie took a whole new approach with its espionage thriller storyline. Here we will be served with questions need to answered in the early 30 minutes of the movie.

What secret that Fury try to find and hide?

Who ambushed Fury?

Why Captain America being targeted by Shield?

What I really admire about Marvel writers is how they managed to write several of their recent movies without any major hitch. They already pulled off Iron Man 1, 2 & 3, Thor 1 & 2, The Avengers, The Agent of S.H.I.E.L.D tv series and also this Captain America 1 & 2. That is 8 movies altogether in one universe.

What they pulled off for Captain America 2 also is not a small feat also. Even though it started as an espionage thriller movie with a twist, they also realized that this is just a comic as an origin. It can't be too complicated or the movie goers will be confused. After the plot presented some questions need to be answered, it follows a linear set of storyline to get the point.

It was an old foe from the first movie that provided all the answers in the location where its all started - the training base. It was douche bag Arnim Zola in the form of a freaky computer AI that Captain America found the root of all the answer that he need. It was Hydra all over again. And also the answer about Bucky - The Winter Soldier.

Return as an AI.

Ahhh the misleading trailer marketing ploy. All this while I thought that the Winter Soldier was the mastermind in all the event of the attack but disappointingly it looks like that he was not unlike Captain America - just a tool for the higher ups. After his disappearance in the last mission in the first movie, Bucky apparently had become Arnim's lab rat - turning him to a super soldier. And all this while his memory had been erased.

Best bud returns.

Compared to all of the Marvel movies apart from Avengers I think that this movie is the best. Why? Because the threat brought by Hydra this time is real. They are everywhere but invisible. The Hellicarriers meant for peace control will be used by Hydra for their goal. Instead of targeting the potential terrorist, the weapon will point to it's master.

The mass killing weapon.

I always mentioned that to get a great story is to engaged the audience with the purpose of the protagonist. Throw a mean antagonist to the storyline and you will give a great purpose to the main character. Compared to the other 'weak' villains in their other movies, this time Marvel really did deliver. Every time the hero won over the villain, it does deliver some dopamine to the system.

Hydra - musuh dalam selimut.

Marvel saved the last plot shocker in the end. Captain America the equivalent of Superman in the Marvel universe. Even though he lacked in superpowers, his quality lies in his leadership and also his honesty. If we had been served with a pathetic depressed Superman last year by DC, Captain America is not someone that will hesitate with his decision. He actually knows what he really wants.

Even though he is Captain America, his last action represented everything that America is not. Resenting the fact that there is no more freedom in the world with all the espionage by S.H.I.E.L.D, he want S.H.I.E.L.D to be dissolved. This mirrors the NSA and Snowden thing in the real world. This must have a great impact to their tv series: Agent of S.H.I.E.L.D. Since ironically there should be no more of them.

At the end of the movie, it showed how big the character of Fury really is. Even though he had to abandoned all that he had been fighting for by the dissolve of S.H.I.E.L.D, he still go through for the sake of mankind. And he still pursue the remainder of the double agents Hydra in the world. Yeah, I know this kind of chivalry only exist in the comic world, but still....

With the new twist, the future of the next Marvel movie universe will be unpredictable. Exciting times ahead....

5 out of 5. Bravo. But the biggest joke in the movie is:

Note: Arsenal won 3-1 against West Ham when I wrote this. This is after winning the semi final FA cup. Keep the great news coming....
