The Lego Movie: Release the Kragel!!!

Last weekend was something that I was looking forward to, since for the past two weeks I didn't have the weekend for myself due to job and family related. While we were lazing around in the house all morning, Lia asked where should we eat for lunch.

I suggested the Sushi King at Jusco Tebrau. And may we add watching The Lego Movie to the list?

I only knew about this movie when Rosman mentioned it to me several days before. The review in Cinema Online looks good, so I think I should give it a try. With the theme of the movie is the Lego, bringing Haziq together with us will not be a problem.

When we arrived for lunch at the Sushi King, it was already 2pm - a bit late. So when the food arrived, out tummy have actually grumbling. Japanese food is actually not my favorite - they are Lia's and Haziq's. But it was a rare occurrence that we managed to clean slate the whole food that we have ordered.

The movie starts at 4.45pm - we decided to have the Asar prayer before going into the hall. So unsurprisingly, when we entered the hall the story already started. It was the opening scene where the evil Lord Business steals the super weapon Kragel (??) from Vitruvius.

Fast forward 8 and a half years later, we introduced withe the protagonist Emmet the construction worker. And surprisingly, he is not a hero material. He was just a generic Legoman in the big Legocity. He was so generic that he followed every single move in his instruction book.

And then he met Wyldstyle and his life changed when the Piece of Resistance (??) stick at the back of his body and become the Special one. He was pursued by the Bad Cop, the Lord Business henchman. The chase continues from one Lego world to another accompanied by Wylestyle.

The Lord Business (or President Business that he always being known in the Legocity) despise freedom in building the Lego bricks. He wants all the Lego world to be a standard, generic world that he considers to be his ideal utopia. And to achieve this goal, he intends to use the super weapon Kragel in a few days time.

The one that stands in his way whole these times are the Masterbuilders. They are the superstars of the Legoman and Legowoman. Masterbuilders could build Lego bricks as they intended instead of relying to the standard manuals.

And the Masterbuilders are one funky group of characters.

The Batman is an egoistical maniac that will only use black and very very gray Lego bricks for his builds. He was also Wyldestyle's boyfriend.

People always confused between Gandalf & Dumbledore since both are wizards.

Unexpectedly, the Green Lantern is a loser who like to be in the Superman's accompany much to Superman's annoyance.

And there were some lesser known Masterbuilders that had the jokes made in fun of them such as the 80-s something Space Guy who really an old tech guy and also the The Metal Beard, who is a mental pirate.

What do I think of the movie? Well, I have some problem with the jokes in the movie. Most of it because it was based on the western & the Lego pop culture. I found myself wondering about some of the jokes after a while. Am I getting the jokes right?

But don't worry because most of the jokes are parody. If you have seen some of the movies, you'll probably get the jokes.

The reference to the Matrix can't be ignored with the Special One in the story line.

Even the shout of Release the Kragel was the direct reference to The Clash of the Titans series.

From the start until the end you will be mesmerized by the Lego universe. Every single detail in the Lego worlds are made by Lego bricks, even the shower drops. But I found the transformations or creations by the Masterbuilders are quite too fast and messy for me, it was Transformers all over again.

It's all about details details details...

Bringing Haziq to the movie was a double edge sword decision. While the movie clearly targeted kids, bringing one to the cinema hall have some distractions.

When only 10 minutes into the hall...
"Umi, Haziq laparlaaa...." Even though he had a plate of rice and a bowl of soba for lunch. :-)
So Lia had to go & bought some pop corns at the entrance.

After a joke scene bit after everyone else had their laugh, there was still a loud laugh from the corner of the hall at seat F2. It was Haziq - missed the timing of the joke.

When the movie entered the last 30 minutes, apparently he already got bored.
"Umi, boleh bukak lampu tak?" Erm, suka hati dia je.

Mistimed his laugh so many times.

It was only he was sitting on my lap that he managed to keep quite until the end of the movie.

I have to admit that  didn't have a clue how the story would developed until the end. I don't an inkling what is the super weapon Kragel was and what was the Piece of Resistance actually is (why is it square?) until the very end of the movie.

The ending is a typical kid's stories ending kinda way. For myself, I would give it 3 out of 5. It was OK but not great. With Malaysia already having our own Legoland, I still expect this movie to be a blast in Malaysia.

I still think the song "Everything is Awesome" is awesome!

So, if you're in your 20s and you have your own kids or your nephews around, bring them along to this movie.....

and RELEASE THE KRAGEL!!!
