Doctor = Engineer = Only humans
On Wednesday we went to the hospital for Haziq's further ear inspection. Two weeks ago we had the initial appointment with the doctor, but retrospectively it was pointless because Haziq didn't stop screaming while the doctor wanted to probe his ears.
Haziq two weeks earlier - Tak nak check telinga!!! |
The problem started when Haziq having these episodes with his ears.
"Sakit, ada bunyi dalam telinga".
He have the same problem as me when I'm a kid - we both have hard ear wax. While others could easily clean theirs with cotton bud, we have to physically pull them out. So Lia & myself suspected that his ear wax is the cause of the problem. Even after we had dripped some drip oils to ease the ear wax out, most of them still inside.
So we came to a conclusion. Haziq need to be sedated so that the doctor could do his inspection and clean out Haziq's ears.
Haziq had sensed something off when we brought him to the hospital that morning. When we changed his clothes for the operation room's robe, he screamed as loud as he could. Since he never letting me go, I had to accompany him to the OR.
While the anesthesia specialist do the explanation to me while we're walking to OR, I began to contemplate the decision to do the procedure with Haziq was screaming in the background. Even though I'm not the patient today, I can't helped being nervous seeing all the medical equipments in the big white room. No wonder this kid's grasp on my hands getting stronger.
Four people needed to hold Haziq while the specialist put on the sedative mask to him. After a while he sleeps under the drug. While the specialist will perform his job, I had been ushered outside to the waiting room.
If Haziq was unbearable before the procedure, it was worse when he was awakened after the procedure finished. As someone that had also experienced sleeping under the drug, I could understand the feeling. It is the messed up sense of time flying by. After I had woke up after the procedure in 2009, I felt like it was only seconds (in the beginning of the prep) but in fact it was already three hours flew by in the real world.
Haziq was screaming and crying harder when he was brought out from the OR. It seems he wanted to vent up all the frustration and he didn't even realized that he had been in the procedure for 20 minutes in the OR. The screaming continued for about one hour. We can add Hospital Pakar Pasir Gudang in the long list that Haziq becoming a celebrity because of his booming voice.
Getting Haziq to calm down. Macam abah dia pulak yang sakit. |
Even though handling Haziq after that was a nightmare, I was glad that we had gone through with the procedure. Because after that the doctor showed me what he managed to sucked out - a big ass ear wax from his left ear. We wouldn't be able to get it out using the normal ways.
I have a sister and a cousin that are doctors by profession. When I inquired about baby's ear wax and Haziq problem, their answer is the same:
"We shouldn't try to get the ear wax out. The ear wax will naturally come out by its own. Just let nature takes its course."
He he he. I just like to shove Haziq's gigantic ear wax to their face right to show how wrong they are. Here! This is nature taking its course!
Haziq doing some self reflecting after the procedure. |
I guess I had over simplified the issue. It is the same as the function of an engineer. Back in varsity, every engineering problem have a solution and can be calculated. But when I was first in the real working environment, nothing seems is simple.
We are all humans after all. Theory requires experience in tandem to work perfectly.
As for Haziq, he managed to calm himself down. We still need to do another follow up visit by next month. The doctor found a little bit of liquid behind his ear drum. Nothing to worry he said.
In the mean time, he got to show his ear wax to his Oma and Atok this weekend.
