MCS Fun Run: The Plasticy Run

I have a busy running schedule in September. Most of the reason is because when the haze that enveloped KL & Malaysia back in June, the Standard Chartered Marathon organizer decided to push the date to 29th September. Having ran the Oren Sport Run in the 16th, the total runs in September will be three if I include the MCS Fun Run that we ran on 30th Sept 2013.

How does Iqbal & myself gets the idea to join the MCS Fun Run?

It started when Iqbal felt kasihan about the running event since it seems to him that the event didn't get a lot of participants. That was when he suggested to me to join in.

It was just one day before the Standard Chartered Run maaaa....

And it will only be 5km run maaaa.....

The fee will only be RM30 maaaa.....

And still - this event have finisher medal maaaa.....

Since both of us are suckers for finisher medal, this event seems to be a no-brainer for us to join. I'm not sure about Iqbal, but for me it was the decision that back-fired us in the end.

The run start at the Stadium Kelana Jaya at 7.30am. When we arrived, the stadium seems to be full with runners.

To this Iqbal said," Hmmm... ingat tak ramai orang yang masuk..."

This had been confirmed during the speeches given by the organizer. It seems the participants have grew from 1000 last year to 1800 this year.

After that we started the warming up with some Bangra dancing exercise. This seems to be some failure since the trainer was up in stands alone while all the runners were down on the field. Most of moves were complicated so Iqbal & myself just improvised on our own. Making it harder, the warming up session was about 20 minutes.

Dancing to the tunes

A little bit about this MCS Fun Run. This event had been organized by the Malay Cultural Society from KDU College hence the name 'MCS'. There will be 2 events - the 5km fun run & the 3km walk event. The money collected from this event will be channeled to some kids charity homes.

And did tell you that this event is being organized by students? This was really prevalent from the start of the event until the end.....

The starting line of the 5km fun run was from the outside of the stadium. It was the most pathetic starting line that I have ever seen. Two person holding one pole each with a small banner saying START. The pole even broken in half. Previously during my varsity years, I was also kinda active in student's program. This makes me wonder - does it always looked so amateurish like this?

We will start from the small banner that says START, understand?

And off we go! And before I forget, the VIP in this MCS Fun Run event was none other than Nik Nazmi, the current Selangor State Legislative Assembly Deputy Speaker.

From the start, I didn't take this run seriously since it was a fun run. Even though Iqbal managed to take a photo of me from behind after the start off, he immediately dashed to the front & didn't look back. Me? I just ran with the flow....

Kalau larat lari laju... bila letih berhenti laaaa....

Fun Run - Start!

At 1.5km, I was surprised when I arrived at the drink stop.

Aik, baru 1.5km dah dapat air? Awal bebenor ni....

Since they didn't serve any isotonic drinks, I didn't stop for the mineral water. Drinking early in the run for mineral water would make the body heavier instead.

A few meters ahead the runners goes through the intersection between the 5km & 3km event.

Well, I did point out the how awkward the start line looks like, right? Because a sign beside the road during the run made me confused with the distance that we had run.

I had my stopwatch started at the start of the run. When the sign suddenly said '2km to go. Go! Go! Go!', I was quite surprised because it was only 16 minutes after the start off. I had ran 3km with 2 km to go? That was exceptionally fast. Usually it took me about 22 minutes to cover 3km.

Iqbal pointed out to me that the sign said that the distance that runners had covered was 2km. The truth is I had looked at the sign many times to check whether I had read it wrong. I even took the photo of the sign. When I checked back, I didn't read it wrong. The organizer had made the wrong sign.

Tengok... tengok... betul kan aku baca....

Hmmmm, memang program budak-budak la niiii......

The route for the run went through some houses near the stadium. It was quite nice & the tranquility of the area really makes it the perfect location to have a morning run. Among the routes that went through some housing area, this is the best one.

When we reached about 3.5km, we ran through the participants for the 3km walk. And of course, they area all walking nonchalantly.

What can I say about this race? It is just a 5km run that Iqbal & myself would cover during our weekends & for myself there is nothing quite special about it. Rather than that I just like to ramble about the amateurish students who organize this event.

Amazingly, Iqbal did took this run quite seriously. After the run, he told me that is this the only run that he didn't stop for rest. Since usually the distance of the run that we participated was 10km, there was a lot of resting along the way. For myself, I already could condition myself to run continuously for 10km without resting. Not the case with Iqbal. (Surprisingly, even though in some runs he took some rest stops, he still faster than me to the finish line.)

Iqbal decided to have a serious run when it dawn to him that may finished the run without resting when arriving at the drink stall. Since the drink stall was so early in the stage of the run he took the same decision as myself not to stop for a drink. And in the end he finished about 15 minutes ahead of me. If only I knew that he would take this run seriously, I would do the same & have a race with him. And this run would be more interesting instead of the mundane start to finish 5km.

We need to run around the field to get to the finish line.

Remember in the beginning that I'm quite disappointed with this run?

Why?

Because the finisher medal that we got was a PLASTIC medal. This is the first time that Iqbal & myself got a plastic medal for a run. Considering that the main factor that we joined this run is because there is a finisher medal at the finish line, you can say that disappointed is underrated. It is more that we felt tricked.

Bite it like it's real.

By the end of the day, this image of a student holding a broken-in-half pole for the finishing line sums it all up for the whole event. Hmmmm.....

Walawei...

RUN RATINGS - MCS FUN RUN 2013
Organizer - 2/5
The students was not serious enough to organize the event. The event may looked like a lot of glamor on paper but failed in execution.
Kit & Goodies - 1/5
I could live with the shirt even though the rainbow design in the front looks ridiculous. And what is the organizer's obsession with the chewing gums? There's a lot of them! The plastic medal was the finisher punch.
Route - 4/5
The route was perfect for a 5km morning run. All fun run routes should be like this.
Overall Experience - 1/5

Die! Die! Die! I maybe harsh on the students but please get some experience from other runs before decide to organize one.
