Erti Kemerdekaan
Today is the Malaysia 56th National Day. With the slogan of
"Malaysiaku Berdaulat, Tanah Tumpahnya Darahku", even google have make a doodle out of it.
The Gen Y such as myself will not fully understand the meaning of Kemerdekaan no matter how much we try. We didn't experience the Japanese invasion or the British reign in Tanah Melayu. After reading the book written by Dr M "The Doctor in the House", the accounts on how he survives the era is quite fascinating. Reading & knowing is a different matter compared to understanding & experiencing the meaning of Kemerdekaan.
That is why the campaign to put out the Malaysian flags only have a lukewarm response.
That is why when the national anthem played in the cinemas it meets with scorn.
That is why some of them thinks it is OK to put the Malaysian flags upside down.
Because most of them didn't experience let alone understand the hardship before Merdeka.
They confuses between politics & patriotism.
They allow themselves to be the tools for the politicians. Do they think that politicians care about them at all?
Idiots they are.
When I was kids, the Merdeka means that it will a holiday. No school day, yea!!! Watching tv, running in the evening.
At highschool, Merdeka means that I could free myself from the hell hole. No more studying. No more eating at the disastrous dining hall foods.
The varsity phase was an unique one. Merdeka means finding one true strength to identify myself.
And where I'm standing now, Merdeka means I could sleep at night knowing that my family is well covered for the future.
The Merdeka meanings will change throughout the years for all of us but I never doubt that we need to rediscover the true meaning of the freedom fighters in 1957.
What is the meaning of Merdeka for you?
