KL 10k Road Race: Enduring The Pain
Last Sunday, me together with Iqbal ran at the KL 10k Road Race event (14th April 2013). For me, I'm looking forward for an event that will be properly organized for a while. From all the events that I had joined from November last year until February this year, the only one that had been properly organized was the Dragon Back Run.
But my hope was quickly squashed when Iqbal & I went to get our starter packs on Saturday, one day before the run. The running shirt was not a branded one & the kit received was so bare. Even the running number paper was not waterproof, remarked Iqbal. Maybe the next day won't be so bad, I hoped quietly.
The next morning, we went out right after Suboh to Padang Merbok. This will be my first event I'm wearing my new shoes Brooks. This also will be the 1st event this year that Iqbal & I will compete between ourselves in a 10km event. The last time that he lost in the Melawati Run, he was quite annoyed that he didn't do better.
Trying to change for the better, this time I'm doing the warming up before the starting off at 7.00 am. 15 minutes before the announcer letting the runners off, I'm doing light running about 700m to and fro at the parking area. After warming up a bit, I realized that I forgot my sweat towel. Oh well, this will be a very sweaty run.
And off we go!!!
500m:
The race already took its victim. I saw one runner already injured his ankle. Poor guy.
1km:
This area famous for its hilly area. Even the 1st km there is already some gradient. Some runners already walking. The race separates the runners that usually ran less than 3k in their practice.
2km:
Entering Persiaran Bukit Tunku. Personally for me, this road is hell. Already had a taste of the road during Kidney Run 2012. Already expecting the worst. Already have SENIOR WOMAN passing my by until lost count how many of them (what make it worse, the woman category start 10 mins after the man category).
3km:
Glancing at the watch. My timing - 22mins (normal training timing 24 mins). So far so good.
4km:
Arriving at the 1st water station. Scrambling for the Revive isotonic drink.
5km:
Finally exiting the hilly side of the Persiaran Bukit Tunku. Successful in challenging Persiaran Bukit Tunku without walking - another achievement for me.
6km:
Glancing at the watch again. My timing - 38 mins (normal training timing 42 mins). Iqbal passed me from behind at this time. Maybe his strategy at the hilly roads is better than me. Didn't waste any time & passed him again.
6.5km:
Disaster strike. Suddenly felt a sharp pain at my left foot. This is the 1st time that I faced injury during running in any event. Eventually stop and walk until 7km.
7km:
Iqbal catch up with me again from behind. But it seems that he is a worse state compare to me. Looks like he had depleted most of his energy at the Persiaran Bukit Tunku. Ran side by side with him.
8km:
Arriving at the 2nd water station. Iqbal too slow. Left him when there was only 2km left in the race.
9km:
Chugging to the finish line while enduring the pain. Ran & then walking when the pain become unbearable. Sprint to the finish line when Padang Merbok can already be seen.
10km:
Finish!!! Complete the race in 1 hour & 16 mins. The official result - I'm #727 out of 1036 runners in my category. Iqbal arrived 4 mins later. This will be my 4th win against him. Alaa Bal, kamon laaa... Bagi la competition sikit....
RUN RATINGS - KL 10K ROAD RACE 2013
Organizer - 4/5
I didn't find any fault with the organizer. What is more heartening is that all of the organizer is quite enthusiastic in doing what they done.
Kit & Goodies - 2/5
The kit is abysmal. The medal is painfully the smallest one that I had ever got. The bib number should be waterproof. There was a lot of them left at the hills.
Route - 4/5
One of the best route that I have ever taken. Must run with caution though as a wrong technique can led to injury.
Overall Experience - 3/5
It should be 4. But with my injury + minimal kit list + the small medal ever makes it 3.

With this kind of medal you can't use the tagline "Not Just Another Race" |
